Expeditions - Suck and See
Time needed
2.5 hours.
Cost
Food items.
Numbers
8 plus.
Description
Split the Unit into four groups. Each group has to buy and cook a meal as if on
an expedition: group 1 breakfast, group 2 lunch, group 3 tea and group 4
snacks. Go to a shopping centre and buy what you can with the money each
group has. Limit the total of each meal to $15. Return to the hall and have each
group prepare and cook their selection for tasting. Everyone should have a taste.
Have the Venturers evaluate their selection, based on dollar value, taste and
nutritional value for example.
Then possibly have a coach from the Australian Institute of Sport, or a nutritionist, give a talk on what food is good for what type of activity.
Before, during and after the activity highlight the work done by the six major nutrients: protein, minerals, vitamins, carbohydrates, fats and water. (For example: hiking requires additional carbohydrate supplies; on average, the body can store enough sugar for about 1.5 hours of strenuous activity).

Comments
There is a good booklet on food for cycling which can be easily adapted to any vigorous activity. It covers meals before, during and after activities. It cannot be purchased (unless you are training for the Olympics) so if you wish to have a copy contact Andrew McCance, telephone 086 493 916
