The criteria set out below is a summary of the requirements. The Venturer Scout Passport should be used to determine
the exact conditions required.

The Personal Growth award area provides an opportunity to find out about yourself through expression, ideals, mental
pursuits and your lifestyle.
All four topics are compulsory, and one must also be done at a higher level.
While the requirements may at first seem a bit complex, just remember that you will end up with four badges at
level one (with maroon edging) and one badge at level two (with green edging). See page 10 of the passport or our
Badges page.
It is expected that this award will require a minimum of 70 hours.

Expression 1
Unit Council approval required.
A minimum time of 10 hours is expected.
Show an improvement or appreciation of an art form by completing ONE of the following.
- Submit three artistic works showing improvement.
- Perform in three performances of an artistic nature.
- Attend at least three performances or exhibitions or read at least three works and satisfy your examiner that
an increase in understanding or appreciation of the art form has been achieved.
- Other expressions, activities determined to be of equivalent standard.

Lifestyle 1
Unit Council approval required.
A minimum time of 10 hours is expected.
An introduction to physical activities. Show an increase in physical proficiency and general fitness over a period
of time.
Do number 1 and ONE of numbers 2, 3 or 4.
Must do:
- Collect information on the effects of tobacco, alcohol, and other addictive drugs. Or, another aspect of maintaining
and promoting health.
Select one of the following:
- Participate for at least three months in a sport and show an improvement in proficiency.
- Participate in a physical development program for at least three months and show an improvement in performance.
- Other fitness activities determined to be of equivalent standard.

Ideals 1
Unit Council approval required.
A minimum time of 10 hours is expected.
Through an exploration of moral, social and religious customs and teachings, to better understand your relationships
with other people and to discover what is involved in your acceptance of the Scout Law and Promise.
Do any THREE of the following.

- Participate in the detailed research, planning and delivery of a formal Unit debate on a topic that examines
common beliefs or values.
- Make contact with a voluntary organisation and report on how it is organised and what needs it meets.
- Attend the religious service of a cultural group different to your own and report on the similarities and differences
between the group's beliefs and your own.
- Make contact with the clergy and lay members of a local church and investigate the organisation, role and effectiveness
of the church in the local community.
- Plan and present a Scouts Own.
- Develop an understanding of personal values and moral behaviour and how they can be related to the Scout Promise.
Other ideals activities of an equivalent standard.

Pursuits 1
Unit Council approval required.
A minimum time of 10 hours is expected.
Develop existing interests or undertake new recreational activities.
Interests are to be carried out over a period of at least three months.
Some common examples are:
Chess
Bridge
Photography
Stamp collection
Bird watching
Astronomy
Motor/Cycle maintenance
Welding
Carpentry/Cabinet making
Computers

Remember, although the four activities above are compulsory.
You only need to do ONE of the following level 2 activities.

Providing for the development of an artistic appreciation through active participation.
Interests are to be carried out over a period of at least six months. The degree of involvement and depth needs
to be greater than in Expressions 1.
Develop an art form and display.
OR
Perform in public.

An introduction to physical activities. Show an increase in physical proficiency and general fitness over a period
of time.
Do BOTH of the following.

- Collect suitable information and make a presentation on the physical and mental health of correct diet, sleep,
recreation and stress and the benefits of physical fitness as a life style.
- Participate for one full season (or six months) in a sport.
Show a significant improvement.

Ideals 2

Through an exploration of moral, social and religious customs and teachings, to better understand your relationships
with other people and to discover what is involved in your acceptance of the Scout Law and Promise.
Do any FOUR of the following.
Specific activities done in Ideals 1 cannot be claimed for Ideals 2.
In other words, no double dipping!

- Participate in the detailed research, planning and delivery of a formal Unit debate on a topic that examines
common beliefs or values.
- Attend the religious service of a cultural group different to your own and report on the similarities and differences
between the group's beliefs and your own.
- Make contact with the clergy and lay members of a local church and investigate the organisation, role and effectiveness
of the church in the local community.
- Make contact with District Scouting Staff and compare the aims organisation, and effectiveness with another
service group in your area.
- Take part regularly in the organised activities of an ethnic group (other than your own) over a period of six
months and arrange an activity involving your Unit and young members of the group.
- Plan and present a Scouts Own.

Interests are to be carried out over a period of at least six months.
Some common examples are given in Pursuits 1.
You may choose to continue with the same interest that you did in Pursuits 1, or you may choose another interest either related or entirely different.
