The criteria set out below is a summary of the requirements. The Venturer Scout Passport should be used to
determine the exact conditions required.

This area requires an Outdoors Activity, an Expedition, and an Initiative Activity.
All three topics are compulsory.
In addition, the Outdoor activity OR the Expedition must also be completed at a higher level.
In effect there are five activities to be completed. Outdoors 1, Expeditions 1, an Initiative Activity and
either Outdoors 2 OR Expeditions 2.
The badges go on the right arm. See page 10 of the passport or our Badges page.
It is expected that this award will require a minimum of 60 hours.

Outdoor 1 Unit Council approval required.
A minimum time of 10 hours is expected.
The outdoor activity may be developed from an existing interest or something entirely new and may be done individually or in a group.
Some suggestions are:
Canoeing
Caving
Climbing
Sailing
Horseback touring
Any other type of activity of an equivalent standard to those mentioned above.
Your examiner needs to have had experience (preferably recent experience) in
the area in which you plan to walk/cycle/canoe etc.

Expeditions 1 District Venturer Council approval required.
A minimum time of 6-8 hours walking per day over a two day period is expected.
Other activities such as cycling or canoeing etc. are also suitable.
Examiners: The examiner must be approved by the DVC and must be able to assess the route to be
traveled having regard to terrain, and possible weather conditions that might be expected in the area.
The examiner must be satisfied that the knowledge and skills of all members of the expedition
are adequate. Adequate prior training is essential.
Your examiner needs to have had experience (preferably recent
experience) in the area in which you plan to walk/cycle/canoe etc.

Initiative (see also our information on
Initiative Activities) Unit Council approval required.
A minimum time of 10 hours is expected.
This overnight (Branch approved) course evaluates the Venturer’s ability to
“get up and go”, to make decisions
and to be able to participate in a team while evaluating, planning and solving each incident.

Remember, although the three activities above are compulsory.
You only need to do ONE of the following level 2 activities.

Outdoor 2 District Venturer Council approval required.
A minimum time of 30 hours is expected.
The same scope as Outdoor 1 above but with greater emphasis on leadership. Taking the lead while climbing or teaching
others to canoe for example.
Your examiner needs to have had experience (preferably recent experience) in the
area in which you plan to walk/cycle/canoe etc.

Expeditions 2 District Venturer Council approval required.
A minimum time of 30 hours is expected.
The Venturer must have satisfactorily completed Expeditions 1.
The same scope as Expeditions 1 above but with greater emphasis on leadership. The expedition
will take at least four days (three nights out). Other members of the expedition may obtain
Expeditions 1 for participating and assisting.
Your examiner needs to have had experience (preferably recent experience) in the
area in which you plan to walk/cycle/canoe etc.
