Unit Management Course.
The last Unit Management course for 2004 was run on the 12th September at Head Quarters. We had a good turn out of 11 Venturers and we also had a couple of Venturer Leaders and a parent helper who sat in on the course for the day.
During the course, the Venturers are shuffled around and placed into “Course Units” and actually go through all aspects of and procedures of how to manage their Units back in their Groups. In these course units they have to name their unit, come up with a constitution, have unit elections, do a short term and long term program and then at the end of the course, these units have to do a project which encompasses a trip away, normally interstate and has to have some kind of adventurous activity component to it. The Venturers were very creative with their projects and they have to show their planning, fundraising, administration and total trip costing and plan as well.
The course is a fairly intense day of absorbing information, but we try to make if fun for everyone involved and from the course evaluation sheets, we think that it was successful.
Comments like: “I thought it would be really boring, but it was really good and informative and I really enjoyed it” and
“absolutely brilliant” were amongst the comments received. All who attended came with a positive outlook and were receptive to learning new ideas and also listen to things that they might have known beforehand, but everyone respected everyone else’s thoughts and comments and were willing to share their experiences and listen to others share theirs. So when these young people come back to the Units with new ideas or renewed enthusiasm, don’t put a dampner on them, embrace their energy and listen to what they have to say.
So on behalf of Paul Ware and myself, I would like to thank the Venturers who participated in this course and may I add that we both had a great day as well.
