Snow Venture 07
Snow Venture 2007 with its fantastic snowfall and fun was a tremendous hit. Venturers and leaders, scattered from all different units over SA grouped together to enjoy a week long cross-country skiing adventure. Most of the Venturers, having never seen snow before, grew quite excited as we climbed the mountain in our bus and saw flickers of white, on the road and hillside.
Arriving at Windy Corner on the Falls Creek Mountain, we clicked in our bindings and heaved our heavy packs onto our backs. As we skied off along the cross-country trail to the Chalet, the daunting thought of the mere 11km ahead of us, popped into our heads.
A great effort (and time) later we found ourselves sitting in the beautiful Bogong Rover Chalet, sipping hot chocolate and claiming mattresses.
Touring the beautiful alpine slopes (horizontal, vertical and in-between) we all became aware of the fascinating views and sights to see, including Wallace’s Hut, Cope Hut and the boys in pink tutus.
A memorable day trip to ‘Strawberry Saddle’, saw blisters appearing and feet aching, we were assured our destination was, “just around the hill”. Around ten kilometres later, we were shown the magnificent toilet, to which we had travelled to gaze upon!!
Having ‘pox’ weather a couple of the days in the snow, we amused our selves around the Chalet playing card games, exploring Mt Mattress (sleeping), Twister, learning Danish culture and customs with a scout exchange student and playing “Epic 8-ball”.
Many Venturers discovered skills they either loved or hated, such as wood chopping, cleaning dishes, baking birthday cakes, or shovelling snow off the steps at 6:15am ready for parade.
On the journey back, we left the Chalet dark and early, skiing as the sun rose, and arriving back at the Falls Creek Oversnow around 11:00am.
The bus trip back home was a humorous time for all, stopping at Kerang for the night; we went to dinner at a fancy looking pub. Upon our arrival, many of the people inside made a quick exit as the busload of Venturers walked in. After our meals were finished, we walked back to the Kerang Scout hall where we set up our sleeping gear. Arriving back in Adelaide at around 2:00pm on Sunday we were picked up by our envious parents and siblings.
