Scouting Statewide February 2005
VENTURING ON . . . news from Venturing SA
Hey everybody and I hope that you all had a lovely rest over the hectic season. Ho, ho, ho and Auld Lang Sine and all that guffo. I certainly put my feet up for a while – did one of my jigsaws and avoided the daytime TV.
So what about your New Year’s resolution? Mine was to learn all the knots in Chris’s knot book.......Nah – decided that I will never learn all the knots in the knot book (a) because I don’t do knots that regularly (b) I don’t have any interest in knots and (c) that is boys stuff – so I am happy just knowing the Alpine Butterfly (which I actually learned during my time in SES) (a) because it looks pretty (b) because it is a useful knot and (c) it has reference to a butterfly, which are kinda cute (maybe I can find a knot that mentions dragon flies because I like them too!!). But seriously folks, setting goals and reaching them is what we try and do here in Venturing for both the Youth members and Leaders. My New Year’s resolution is locked away inside me, a secret only to me and only I know whether I eventually achieve it. My goals for 2005 and the Venturer Section are being worked on and Mich will see to it that we aim to achieve our goals. Many of my goals last year were met, due to a fantastic team of people who worked together to achieve a wonderful year for our wonderful section. These team members, who might I add have not only one job in Scouts, but many, work tirelessly to run courses, activities and events and without them – the section would be sunk. So to my network of busy bees – THANKYOU – your friendship, dedication and support, not to mention your senses of humour were greatly appreciated. So – let’s get on with 2005. Before we dive into 2005, let’s pour over 2004. Let’s start with:
SuperSplash 2004
WOW!!! What another wonderful weekend was had by all. The weather was very kind to us. We did have to call off the water activities on Saturday afternoon, but that meant that Land yachting went off. So you win some and you lose some. The activities were excellent. The food was great and well done to Bob Ellis and his team who accepted the challenge after we farewelled Faye Burgess and her team after so many years. Leaders helped out as marshals and we nearly matched the number of Venturers that we had in 2003. So many people volunteered their time to make an event such as this one come together and I can only say how much I appreciated your time, suggestions, encouragement and support to help make it happen. The photo on this page is of our winners (Caitlin and Shane) of the climbing wall competition that is traditionally held on the Saturday night of SuperSplash. Congratulations to you both and well done.
Queen’s Scout Awards
In 2004, we had the most Queen’s Scout recipients that we have had in many years. It was a wonderful achievement of the Venturers who worked so hard. We have already had some approvals for QSA this year – so things are looking very good again.
I am looking forward to this year and I hope that I will meet more of you and your Venturers throughout 2005.
Keep smiling and remember, “Adventure is worthwhile”.
Yours in Venturing
