8 intrepid Venturers along
with 3 leaders paddled the 7 km distance around Delphin Island [West
Lakes].
After checking the latest boating forecast, transporting canoes and
Venturers to West Lakes we were ready to hit the water - well almost -
sponges, munchies, drinks, consulting the map, going through safety
procedures, checking P.F.D.s all were done... then we were actually on the
water and ready to start for our first goal - the buoy opposite the sea
scout hall but- our intrepid leaders had us practise emergency stops,
turns, rafting up, capsize drill... another necessary step before we started
- then we were off into a good S.W.breeze.
The coming cold front was obvious as a dark tall bank of cloud to the
west. It was forecast to reach Adelaide after midnight but the leaders
kept checking the wind [direction, force and changes] as we progressed.
Night fell as we reached the main road bridge for our third stop to
regroup, eat, drink, talk...
Rounding the northern end of the main lake Andrew overcorrected his canoe
and took a dip - our first and only capsize! A quick rescue and we soon
under the next road bridge for a well earned stop.
Being in the lee of the island paddling was much easier and we all made
good progress.
Soon the end was in sight - however the West Lakes Cruise Boat came into
our path and we were forced to wait at the buoy with our torches on - to
indicate our position.
We chose to hug the western shore of this part of the lake and then cut
across after the cruise boat had passed. We beached our canoes, loaded up,
changed into extra warm clothes and then said our goodbyes and thankyous...
Another excellent activity! Thanks again to Gawler Venturers
Michael Woodward.
